Sports and Americana Auction House

Lansing, IL (December 16, 2010) – Legendary Auctions, a leading Sports and Americana auction house, announced that the recent sale of The Bill Mastro Collection substantially exceeded presale estimates and set a new record. A signed original handprint of Babe Ruth was sold for a price that would make most peoples’ palms sweat. The unique, mint condition handprint sold for $222,000, more than doubling all previous auction records for a sports item signed by an athlete. (To date, only signed game used items have eclipsed this lofty amount.)

According to Doug Allen, President & CEO of Legendary Auctions, bidding on the handprint was heated, and extended well into the early morning hours with several collectors engaged. “There is no secret to the item’s appeal,” said Allen. “Everyone who views the handprint is compelled to place their own hand over it. This is as close to the Babe and that era of baseball history as a collector can get.” In addition, Allen noted, “the record price is a testament to the fact that regardless of the soft economy, great items still achieve great prices.”

The origin of the handprint dates to July, 1934. Palm reader Alice Denton Jennings published an article in an issue of Baseball Magazine entitled “The Hand of George Herman Ruth: A Character Analysis of the Famous Babe’s Paw.” Her in-depth decoding of his handprint confirmed traits of powerful leadership, superior sportsmanship and keen observation. Jennings personally obtained the print from Ruth, and it was utilized as the visual centerpiece for the article.

Baseball Memorabilia and Collectibles Make a Great Gift

This will look great on your tree

The holiday season is fast approaching, and gift options are abundant. As you search for that last scarf, dress shirt, and gadget, don’t forget about the baseball enthusiast on your list. Baseball collectibles make a great gift because they do not lose value, display nicely, and prove that you kept your special someone else’s interests in mind while you were shopping.

So make your list, check it twice, but how about a gift that’s really nice. Here’s why you should consider baseball memorabilia for gifts this season:

  • The right gift could appreciate in value – Quality collectibles may increase in value over time. Purchasing items of rookies (first year players) can prove to be an excellent  investment, especially if they become great ball players. Anything autographed by their favorite player could also be a good investment.
  • Do some research - You may not know which athletes your sibling, spouse, or significant other follows but if you know their favorite team, that’s half the battle. Pay attention to which jerseys they own and team they root for. If possible check out what type of memorabilia they already own.
  • Your gift will be remembered – While other people are faking smiles as they unwrap yet another pack of tube socks, your sports fan will be genuinely pleased with such a thoughtful gift. Tube socks don’t appreciate in value, and they certainly don’t create gift envy.
  • A family heirloom – When properly displayed and cleaned, collectibles will last a lifetime. Then, they can be passed down to children, grandchildren, and friends causing yet another round of gift envy
  • Remembering a great moment or event - Your sports fan will enjoy the nostalgic effect created by antique memorabilia. Autographed bats and balls from historic moments and jerseys from Hall of Fame athletes will bring back memories of games they attended or watched as children.
  • Do you need a great Christmas gift for a baseball fan? If so, then you are in luck, because Grand Slam Sports 360 carries an excellent selection of autographed baseball collectibles, including everything from signed baseballs and autographed baseball jerseys to game used baseball memorabilia items, autographed bats and photographs.

If you are in search of a great baseball memorabilia gift, you can’t go wrong with the large selection of baseball memorabilia and collectibles from Grand Slam Sports 360.

Derek Jeter Yankees Hit Record 24KT Gold Diamond Collection

If you have a sports fan on your shopping list, you have a large selection of great gifts ideas to choose from and your gift will be the one he/she will remember.

You can choose from team merchandise or memorabilia of a favorite player. Some collectibles come in series. For example, I ask for the Topps complete factory set for Christmas. I’ve been doing that since 1980. Some people collect tickets from special games they attended, like a World Series or a child’s first baseball game. You can buy really nice display cases for these tickets. Others may collect World Series pins or patches.

Sports memorabilia gifts are not just for men, there are great selections for the ladies too. There are gifts for the home, both inside and out. There are items with your favorite team’s logo for the kitchen, bath, game room and more. If tailgating/grilling is something friend or family likes to do, there several pieces with his/her team logo. There are also beautiful watches for men and ladies with team logos and don’t forget about the car. You can find a lot of accessories for both inside and outside the car.

If the person you are buying for works in an office there are many items they would be proud to display to show their team and/or player loyalty.

If the person you are buying for has a collection and you are not sure what to get, you always get a display case for one the pieces in their collection. Not only is this a great gift, but it also has a practical side in that it will help protect the piece of memorabilia as well as allow for better displaying.

If you are still not sure what to buy for your sports fan, you can’t go wrong with a gift certificate.

    Sports Memorabilia Display Cases

    Jersey Display

    Jersey Display

The folks who read this blog for the most part are sports fans and particularly baseball fans. As a sports fan, I would bet a large percentage of you are also collectors. The type of collector can range from collecting trading cards up to game used autographed jerseys and everything in between. The level of your involvement has mostly to do with your financial situation. Some people collect as an investment, some for the pleasure of remembering a special moment in their life.

    Magazine Display

    Magazine Display

Wherever you fall in this range you want to protect the items in your collection. Some of these items could include jerseys, balls, bats, hats, helmets, photographs and many other collectible items. The primary benefit of using these cases is the protection and safety they provide the items kept inside. Whether you are collecting for sentimental reasons or financial ones, these cases protect against many environment issues, such as dust. If placed out in the open and handled often by then the oils on the hands and skin can harm the materials, especially cloth and paper items.

In addition to protecting your collectibles, theses cases also provide an excellent way to display your treasured collectibles. Some display cases come with their own lighting fixtures to enhance the presentation of your collectible.

The Collector Treasure Cove has a great selection of display cases as well as collectibles to put into those cases.

    Sports Memorabilia as a Gift

There are many sports events that have collectible pieces attached to them. They could be for specific sporting events where championships were won or records were broken.  It could be something that captures a treasured memory. An even that maybe you and your dad went to or maybe it was you and your son. People love to give sports memorabilia as unique gifts for their family and friends at Christmas, birthdays, graduations and many other special occasions throughout the year. Speaking from experience, I know any sports fan in your life would love to get a special piece of memorabilia as a gift. And they won’t forget who gave it to them.

Some people choose sports memorabilia as unique gifts because their loved one or friend is a great fan of a certain player, for example, Yankee great Derek Jeter. They go in search of items in sports memorabilia, and might find a Derek Jeter Hand Signed 8 x 10 photographs that shows Derek making a great play or setting another milestone. To that particular baseball fan this would be an excellent choice of a sports memorabilia product used as unique gift.

If the person’s team you are buying for wins a championship there will be a large selection of hats, t-shirts, sweats shirts and other logoed items to choose from. These are great gifts because they are a constant reminder of a great moment and they are relatively inexpensive. If it’s been a few months since the championship was won, there is good chance that you can find several selections of videos to choose from.

Perhaps the person you are looking to find a gift for is a collector of members of the Hall of Fame, or Cy Young winners, or maybe Rookies of the Year. If you’re not sure, ask; believe me, they will love to tell you. Once you know a category or a player(s) you will have a large selection of items either hand signed or not to choose from.

If a favorite player is nearing retirement it would be a great gift to give something hand-signed by that player, especially if he has a good chance of being elected into the Hall of Fame five years after he retires. The value of that item will increase and your friend/relative will thank you again. However, if finances are an obstacle, and you have time (maybe a year or two) you could buy an unsigned photo or a trading card of the player and mail it to the player and ask them to sign it. The note should be hand written and sincere. You might be surprised how many players will do that, but usually on their timetable.
